There seem to be a collective case of brain freeze on Lakeshore Council whenever the Ice Cream Festival comes up for discussion and now it looks like our town might lose the fledgling event before its second year.

"They're ready to move on," said a sullen Dave Genik, Lakeshore Economic Development Officer, last Tuesday after Council refused to endorse the 2008 festival until adopting some as yet unknown and, frankly unnecessary policy for festivals in Lakeshore.

That's some way to treat a group of people who have handed Lakeshore the chance to boost its economy and become a destination for tourists at least once per year - all without costing ratepayers a dime.

Not to mention the fact that this foolishness comes from the same Council who will sit in chambers and lament Lakeshore's death of tourism, the defunct Fiddle Contest, and the supposed flooding of our town in bylaws, strategic plans and municipal red tape.

"It's too much," said Coun. Dan Diemer, while arguing on the same night against a bylaw aimed at preventing residents from burning their own houses down. You can say that again, Dan.

Yet he, along with the other seven members of Council, seemingly have no problem watching something as innocuous as the Ice Cream Festival melt away under bureaucratic piffle.

Council's relationship with the Ice Cream Festival organizers (Ontario-Michigan Great Events, or OMG for short) has never been a smooth one. The first bump came last spring, when it was discovered that OMG had been in talks with Town administration without Council expressing consent.

Naughty, naughty. That gaffe earned adminstration a tongue lashing and put OMG organizers in Council's hot seat. Who are you? Who profits from this?

All valid questions that are worth asking - once. OMG is a non-for-profit group, not a charity. They take in money to cover their own expenses, and divert the remaining profits to a charitable organization, in this year's case Lakeshore Community Services. Not once did they ask for a penny from the Town.

Quite the opposite, in fact, OMG was charge $2,250 to set up shop at Lakeview Park on July 1 weekend, plus a $750 damage deposit. They also made a $500 donation to Lakeshore Community Services once the festival was finished. In the end, they wound up losing money, while Town Hall and a local charity gained.

Still, every time OMG organizers have appeared before Council, they have been questioned about their budget, their profits and their motives. Coun. Al Fazio, on some vague mission to "protect" Lakeshore, has been particularly merciless, questioning OMG's non-profit status and why they haven't made their private financial records public, among other things.

I was always impressed with how diplomatic the OMG representatives were in the face of this insanity. Had it been me, I would have been out the door faster then you could say Rocky Road, with a sprinkling of expletives and hand gestures along the way.

Sadly, their patience may be close to running out. They wanted to start planning for 2008's festival at the beginning of this month, now they have to wait for a municipal festivals policy to be approved. Given Council's hectic schedule, the snow will likely be flying before that is done. A more likely scenario, will see bemused OMG staffers pack up and move somewhere else.

That's a shame, because the Ice Cream Festival was one of the few times I've heard people from outside of Belle River discuss coming here to spend their time and money.

For probably the first time in the 27 years I have lived here, this town had a buzz in Windsor, Tecumseh and other places. I have no doubts that this event could still grow to become a major attraction in Essex County, no matter where it is held.

Maybe our elected officials don't get outside our borders enough to notice that sort of thing, or maybe they just don't care. In either case, they've shown breathtakingly poor judgement and are on the verge of killing a potential tourism boom and a source of much needed income for area charities.

They've also embarassed Lakeshore with their treatment of OMG, whose only misstep to date has been putting too much faith in the foresight of our Council.

Incidentally, Council's decision to wait for a festivals policy also put the kibosh on events like Sunsplash and the Comber Fair. Let's hope they get it approved before those events come up next summer, lest they fall under Council's well honed axe too.

I don't believe the public will support the "Greenlinks" after the WUC debacle .I see this campaign as to win back the citizens' trust and support, the hell with the border crossing. The mayor and council have their bigger egos to be stroked and plans for themselves - Schwartz is just a spin doctor.
Just ask any federal Liberal about the sickness of green when they elected a twit with a green scarf as their leader plus the Klingon that will be the parasite to all.
The name "Greenlinks" is just a marketing ploy to make us envision a posh golf course.Will Windsor be seeing Tiger Woods or Pepe Le Pews.

Alas good things don't last as "Unemployment Tuesday" has come to an end.My buddy Pete , an automotive engineer who no longer wants to be an automotive engineer and myself who never wants to see the restaurant business again, would plant our butts on the bar stools at the "Honest Lawyer'.
Libation, food and great conversation topped with the wonderful staff were enjoyed for a few Tuesdays at lunch.
